Our Approach

Our Programs

BGCMLA does not offer its own programs, but rather serves as an umbrella entity for our participating Clubs. As a governing body for the participating Clubs, we help ensure that our Clubs’ respective programs are making an impact and are sustainable. We promote greater operational efficiencies, provide consistent leadership, and facilitate cross-club collaboration.

Impact to Date

BGCMLA officially took over the operations of Nickerson Gardens on April 1, 2016.  The Club opened in February of 2016 originally under the leadership of the West San Gabriel Valley Boys & Girls Club. Since its opening we have a full team in place and strong programming that includes Power Hour, Smart Moves, Triple Play, STEM, Brain Training etc. There are over 300 registered club members with attendance averaging 70 kids a day. Partnerships have also been critical to our success and have included organizations such as LAPD, HACLA Disney & Oracle.

BGCMLA has also taken over the operations for Bell Garden’s Boys and Girls Club. The Club had been formerly operated by Rio Hondo Boys & Girls Club since 1960 and was forced to close due to storm damage. Boys & Girls Club of America asked Boys & Girls Club of Hollywood to temporarily assume leadership of the club, when it was renamed the Boys & Girls Club of Bell Gardens in 2015 and in February 2016, the Club was officially transferred to Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro LA.

The club will officially open June 2017 with a soft launch planned for mid March. Metro LA is in the process of revamping its entire facility thanks to partners like Panera Bread, Nestle & LA84.

Vision Forward

At BGCMLA, we are transitioning our focus from launching and setting the foundation, to driving all efforts around two critical priorities:
  1. Growth (expansion of more sites and programs)
  2. Sustainability (strengthened capacity and collaboration).
We are also establishing targets for youth outcomes to ensure that every child who attends a BGCMLA Club is equipped to succeed in school, work and life. This includes ensuring Club members are on-track to graduate, prepared for college or the 21st century workforce, have adopted a healthy lifestyle and are active agents of positive change in their communities.
